Hello coaches and welcome to the first post on The Groundskeeping Coach, a blog aiming to coaches that are responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the sports field their team calls home. Our goal is to give you the tools (pun intended) to elevate the quality of your own field within your time and budgetary constraints. My father was a high school baseball coach in Arkansas, so I understand the challenges you face on that level in terms of resources. You can read more about that in my bio here.
We are going to cover all of the groundskeeping tasks that you need to do to ensure a SAFE and PLAYABLE (you will hear that a lot) field for your players through a series of posts (1-2 times per month), from the general turf topics like mowing and fertilizing to more-specific personnel topics outlining how to manage your team as a grounds crew. For you baseball and softball coaches out there, there will be many posts about maintaining your skinned infield (the dirt) and the clay on your mound, bullpens, and home plate areas. Throughout, we will discuss products from a multitude of different companies so you can make an educated decision about what you want on your field. Unlike most of the company reps that you talk to about product, we have no product to push and want you to receive unbiased advice.
Mostly, we look forward to hearing from you about what topics you are most interested to learn more about! Send us beauty pictures of your field to tqcarr.turf@gmail.com and we will highlight them in future posts! While you are here, be sure to enter your email address at the bottom of the page so future posts get delivered directly to your inbox. Share us with your fellow coaches and athletics directors!
Keep raking coaches!
